Opposition Leader Kalonzo Musyoka today held a strongly worded press conference, accusing the government of presiding over a climate of intimidation, impunity, and disregard for the rule of law.
Speaking with a firm tone, Musyoka decried what he described as the oppression of ordinary Kenyans and the deliberate silencing of the opposition. He pointed to controversial state actions that, in his words, “betray the spirit of democracy and environmental stewardship.” Among the issues he highlighted was the construction of a road cutting through a conserved forest — a move he said symbolized the government’s reckless disregard for environmental protection and sustainable development.
Musyoka further condemned the continued harassment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, terming it a dangerous precedent where political opponents are selectively targeted. “When a system chooses to weaken its critics through intimidation rather than debate, democracy itself is placed in jeopardy,” he noted.
The Opposition Leader also drew attention to the recent chaos in Mbeere, warning that the unrest reflected deeper frustrations within the citizenry over exclusion, economic pressures, and poor governance. He urged the government to prioritize national cohesion over political expediency.
Musyoka called upon civil society, religious leaders, and the international community to remain vigilant, stressing that the path of impunity, if unchecked, could erode Kenya’s hard-won democratic gains.
“The voice of the common mwananchi must not be stifled,” he said. “We must stand against policies and practices that diminish rights, destroy nature, and entrench inequality.”
The press conference underscored Musyoka’s positioning as a defender of the public interest at a time when the political temperature continues to rise, with questions over accountability, justice, and the future of governance hanging in the balance.
